Democracy?

Mr.Raj Thackrey is agitating violently for giving priority to Maharastrians in railway job sector in MH. He's not merely agitating but is trying to put into effect what he is agitating for. And the method is to bash up hapless and often poor people of other states who have come to MH to appear for group-D railway exams. Well of course Mr.Raj can not go against established industrial houses of MH even if they are owned by non Maharastrians; they are too powerful.

I am not saying he should go against any business or entity solely because it is owned/operated by non-MH's. But if Mr.Raj is true to his values, I would expect him to go against the powerful rather than bash up un-protected public.I can say I sympathise with Maharastrians. Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, has many businesses that are not owned or even operated by Maharastrians.

It seems natural to me that if a fruit grows in your garden you would feel that you have the first right to it. Again the question is what if you did not plant the tree but your tenant did that? What if your tenant invested time and money to make that tree grow and bear fruit? I believe there is no universal answer to these questions; the answers depend on each individual circumstance.Let me not digress from the current issue. The issue here is not about any industrial house but is about each ordinary common man of India. How dare some one attack another citizen of India openly and through a doctrine? What right has the constitution of India (which must be held supreme for any of us to survive) granted Mr.Raj the to violate another citizen's constitutional right? If we, the world's largest democracy are to survive as a democracy beyond this century, then we need to be clear where we hold our constitution at.

Our constitution is the supreme truth for our democracy. As a citizen of India we are provided utmost rights and protection under the constitution and in return we must abide by our constitution. It is of course impossible to have a ideal society which always abides by the rule. Human is prone to error. So, our constitution asks us to elect certain people to represent us and ensure that our constitution is followed. Mr.Raj wants to be one such person. That's a good thing. But our Constitution doesn't discriminate between people based on religion, race, gender, region or even political inclination. So how can one who wants to ensure that our constitution is adhered to is that same one who is so blatantly violating it?

I understand that things are no longer black or white in the current confused state that our democracy has slipped into. We have to deal with great many grey areas. We might think that "then what about the local MH people aren't they being discriminated against?". Well to certain extent they are; otherwise we wouldn't see a Mumbai that is predominantly owned by non-MH people. But for seeking justice for that, tackle the government if you feel you have insufficient local reservations; agitate and educate people to follow you in creating a better MH by going about the process boldly and truthfully.

To attack the weakest of the weak, the ever hopeful and perpetually deceived person, "The Common Man of India", is to hit at the very roots of our democracy. Understand that the people who are following you blindly and doing your bidding our of fervor come under the same category of "The Common Man of India". You are in fact inducing one brother against the other.

No one is perfect neither Mr.Raj nor me nor anyone of us; we all do bad things. Let us all remember that we are just a blip in the life cycle of this earth. We don't know much and are at the mercy of the all powerful supreme being (if one such exists). We don't know where we were before we were born and we don't know where we will head after we die. So, for what ever it is worth, let us be reasonable and do only such things which we in our heart-of-hearts know to be the truth. If you can't seem to know what is true, its simple, put your self in the other person's place, as far as you can imagine and then think what you would go through if such treatment was meted out to you.
