"Nandigram - how can that happen?"
It is astonishing to read about what happened / is happening in Nandigram (West Bengal, India). WB Govn is one of the most non-democratic govns in India. Totally dis-believable was when the CM Mr. Budhadeb was quoted in newspapers justifying the violence by CPI-M cadres as rightful retribution.
Seems the CM termed the CPI-M cadres as 'we' and the people they attacked as 'them'. Later on Mr. Budhadeb went on to say that he made these statements as a CPI-M leader and not as a Chief Minister. So in future elections, will he be ensuring that fair polls are conducted (as a CM should) or will he just make sure that his party wins a what ever price (acting in self interests of the party).
It definitely sends the wrong message to people when a Chief Minister addresses press and makes statements regarding a sensitive issue, solely as a political party leader (might be it is the message Mr. Budhadeb wanted to convey). Looks like West Bengal CM post is a hourly job - when your off work, talk as you like!!
Our central government dependent on Left support is / has hardly done anything to prevent or rectify Nandigram violence from happening. Both state and central governments were mute spectators as violence erupted in Nandigram and intellectuals and intelligentsia of WB were shouting themselves coarse with indignation.
It is very hard for anyone to believe that politics can be 100% corruption free, but this a slap in face of the constitutional rights. The state judiciary is very much to be appreciated in the way it has taken arms against the WB government. This is very similar to how Pakistan judiciary has raised its voice against Mr. Musharraf in Pakistan. Of course one can see that it is illogical to compare Mr.Musharraf and Mr. Budhadeb; still 'bad' is bad, there shouldn't be any finer distinctions like less-bad or lesser-evil when peoples lives and belief in their constitutional rights is at stake.
Everyone that I personally know (of Indian origin / Indian citizen), believes that Indian politics is totally corrupt and that only corrupt people enter politics. More so the feeling that corruption is the only way to survive in politics is universal amongst Indian youth. With this thought how can young people of India who are ethical and non-corrupt think of entering politics? This is a definite reason why corruption is rampant in our society and politics - who ever doesn't wish to be corrupt is shying away from the system itself, harboring a strong belief that corruption can not be eradicated from the 'system' (political, social, commercial).
Power always (almost) corrupts. Being a politician is for trying and getting power. This being the ground reality, corruption in politics, society, business has come to being accepted as a necessary evil. I do believe that many like me wish for a fresh air instead of the suffocating atmosphere prevalent. I do want to see my country to be more respectable. I want my own intellect to perceive that ours is a progressive, ethical and helpful society.
A drop of water, the 'I' can be 'good' , but how does a ocean - zillions of 'I' together be good?
